Keep the denture in.
If you have problems the next day please call the surgery and we will arrange an appointment.
Always remember that a clean healthy mouth heals more rapidly than a neglected mouth.
Do not rinse the mouth for first 24 hours.
Avoid excessive exercise.
Avoid smoking and alcohol.
Any pain may be relieved with painkillers. Usually we recommend Ibuprofen (do not exceed 400mg every 6 hours).
There may be a small amount of bleeding: open your mouth look at the site and see if it is bleeding. Remember a small amount of blood is normal, this mixes with saliva and can look like more. If you notice bleeding keep your denture in if possible and apply gentle pressure for 5 minutes. If it is not possible to keep your denture in place gauze (this will be provided) over the site and apply gentle pressure by biting for 5 minutes. This should be sufficient. If necessary repeat this procedure. If this is not sufficient then please contact the practice (if out of hours, follow the instructions on recorded greeting). After 10pm it may be necessary to contact your local hospital for advice, so if in doubt please call us earlier.
If you are concerned about bleeding and it persists for more than 30 minutes contact the dentist immediately. If unable to contact a dentist go to the accident and emergency department at your local hospital.
Keep your denture out at night.
Remove denture and clean thoroughly (using a nailbrush, water and washing up liquid).
Rinse the mouth gently for a couple of days, then more vigorously, with warm-to-hot salt-water mouthwashes with the denture out, every 3-4 hours and after meals. Use one teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm-to-hot water. This should continue for the next week. If you have got any doubts or concerns please contact the practice.
