Instructions after implant surgery

On the day of surgery (Day 1)

Do NOT rinse your mouth today following your implant surgery.

Take ibuprofen if pain relief is required, up to a maximum of 4x400mg tablets in 24hours.  Do not exceed this dose.

There may be a small amount of bleeding: open your mouth look at the site and see if it is bleeding.  Remember a small amount of blood is normal, this mixes with saliva and can look like more.  If you notice bleeding place gauze (these will be provided) over the site and apply gentle pressure by biting for 5 minutes.  This should be sufficient.  If necessary repeat this procedure.  If this is not sufficient then please contact the practice (if out of hours, follow the instructions on recorded greeting).  After 10pm it may be necessary to contact your local hospital for advice, so if in doubt please call us earlier.

IF YOUR IMPLANT HAS A CROWN OR BRIDGE FITTED IMMEDIATELY YOU MUST NOT CHEW ON THE TREATED AREA FOR 6 WEEKS

Avoid smoking, alcohol and excessive exercise for the first 24 hours after surgery.

On the calendar day following the day of surgery (Day 2)

Please be extra careful in the area of surgery, especially if you have had a bone graft or sutures placed.

Starting 24 hours after your surgery, rinse GENTLY with warm-to-hot salt water (1-teaspoon salt/cup hot water) 3 to 4 times and after meals on Day 2.  This must not be vigorous.

In case of discomfort, take Ibuprofen as required, not exceeding the maximum dose.

On Day 3

Rinse frequently with salt water, 5 to 6 times per day, becoming a little more vigorous daily.

If you have been given chlorhexidine mouth-rinse, use this from Day 3 onwards.

REMEMBER A CLEAN MOUTH HEALS MORE QUICKLY

MAKE SURE THAT YOU ATTEND ANY REVIEW APPOINTMENTS BOOKED
